The Lonely City: A Reflection
The Lonely City is a book written by Olivia Laing that describes her own personal experiences of loneliness, particularly the loneliness she experienced when she moved to New York City in her 30s. Knowing very few people that lived there and only having few contacts, she writes about her personal feelings and experiences and how she coped during this difficult time. Moving from apartment to apartment, she kept herself connected to this world and city by researching and delving into the personal lives of the artists that lived there before her and their own accounts of loneliness. She also picked up some unhelpful habits during her time here in order to stay connected such as not leaving the house and developing an unbreakable internet addiction. For her, this was easier than having to face the outside world which for such a long time she has been so isolated from.
